The first Saturday in May normally would turn sports fans’ attention to Churchill Downs, where the Kentucky Derby is an annual tradition dating to 1875. But the 3-year-old throughbreds won’t begin the Triple Crown chase in Louisville, Kentucky, today.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Churchill Downs Inc. decided to move the 146th Kentucky Derby to Sept. 5.
The Run for the Roses has not been contested on any day other than the first Saturday in May since 1945. That year, the Office of War Mobilization had instituted a ban on horse racing that started on Jan. 3. But on May 8, three days after the 1945 Kentucky Derby would have been run, Nazi Germany surrendered, ending World War II in Europe.
